About us

About us

Tokyo Arts and Space(TOKAS) is an art center dedicated to the generation and promotion of new art and culture from the heart of Tokyo. Based in TOKAS Hongo and TOKAS Residency, TOKAS supports and nurtures young talent in all fields as well as takes a role as a hub in a global cultural network of affiliated cultural facilities in Japan and abroad, and at once a platform for both new talents and internationally active artists to exchange and showcase their works. Through various joint programs, the two venues will continue their broad array of artistic activities in order to provide artists with a stage for creative work.

Missions

  • Support, nurture and promote emerging artists from Tokyo.
  • Establish a platform in Tokyo to function as a hub for art and culture in Asia and the world.
  • Support diverse activities of art and culture in Tokyo as vehicles of the city's vital energy.
  • Function as place for pilot programs, experimental and research projects for new strategic culture policy of Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

Support program

Tokyo Arts and Space hopes to see young talents from Tokyo blossom on the international stage and has developed a series of stepwise and continuous programs tailored to career stage and experience including shows, exhibitions and international fellowships.

The group exhibition which introduces Japanese artists who participated in Exchange Residency Program to stay and work in the cities abroad for 1-3 months, and international artists who stayed at TOKAS Residency.

WONDER SEED

WONDER SEEDS

An open call exhibition aimed to select and sell potential works of young artists. To support young artists, it follows the concept of "BUY = SUPPORT"; giving an opportunity to connect young artists and art lovers/collectors. Visitors are able to purchase works at the exhibition space as well as the online gallery.

As a joint program with Tokyo Wonder Wall (TWW), this is a public exhibition cosponsored by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. TOKAS reviews the works of successful TWW candidates who are interested in participating in the Emerging program, allowing them the opportunity to display their works at TOKAS Hongo.

Several programs such as Exchange Residency Program and International Creator Residency Program are open for the public to apply.
Programs for artists, who have been nominated or recommended by art/educational institutions designated by TWS, to be able to stay at TOKAS Residency.

This program is for the public to show the creative process of residing artists to communicate and to exchange ideas about their works.

Educational Program

We offer educational opportunities for children, working together with inviting artists, musicians and creators. We are collaboratively offering not only the experience of "seeing the real thing," but also "diversified values," which we want children in particular to experience.

A support program for aspiring exhibition organizers has been implemented since 2006 at TWS Hongo, inviting young exhibition organizers to apply with concrete plans for art shows.

Emerging Artist Support Program MUSIC

It serves to discover and foster talented young musicians. The plan that was elected by open applications is played. Lessons and concerts are open to public.

Music Academy

Students can encounter and learn from internationally active musicians' first-hand at this music academy, offering several courses for performance, composition, sound & design etc. Lessons and concerts are open to the public.

This program allows talented young artists, including up-and-coming artists who have made names for themselves through TWS activities, to hold exhibitions at TWS Shibuya.

The educational program in which world-renowned tutors are invited to work together with young artists on cross-genre projects linking the arts, music and design. Symposiums and presentations are open to the public.

It offers a platform for discussion in the form of symposiums, lectures and exhibitions, in which participants delve into the possibilities and challenges of art today from a global perspective.

On Site Lab

It provides a think tank and a platform for experimentation embracing several formats based on the general concept of on-the-spot learning and communication. Also it frequently serves as a venue for talk sessions, workshops and a variety of other programs.

TWS-GATHERING

TWS-Gathering

Artist talks, workshops and OPEN STUDIO are held in conjunction with TWS Art Cafe as a forum for exhibiting works by residing creators during their residency periods. The program is open to the public, allowing creators to interact with other artists and guests.

    

Tokyo Wonder Wall

A public exhibition designed to facilitate the discovery of new talent open to young artist from around Japan. Approximately 100 artists were selected from large numbers of applicants every year during 2000-2016.
