Open Call for the International Creator Residency Program 2013!!


Tokyo Wonder Site is now calling for international creators who could perform new creative activities based on the subjects which are core of our projects such as "Art and Environment", "Cultural diversity and the activities of New Art Centres", or "Possibilities of collaboration" during their residency at TWS Aoyama:Creator-in-Residence for three months.

■Residency Period: From 7 January 2014 to 29 March, 2014 (tentative)

■Details: Creators who are planning to undergo cultural study or research based at TWS Aoyama:Creator-in-Residence during the above period.

■Number of participating artists: 2

■Application period:
From 2 May 2013 to 2 August 2013

*Application Form must arrive at TWS Aoyama by post no later than 2 August 2013
The application must be sent by traceable delivery service.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q.1  Please let me know how I should apply. 

A.  Please download the Application Package from the URL "Application" above and read outline and sample and follow manual.

Q2.  We are artists' duo/group. Is it possible for us to apply together in one single application form with single project? Do we share a room?

A.  Group artists are acceptable. However, the Application Forms should be filled in separately from individual creators. Please make sure to send the forms together. TWS will arrange the room for the artists before residency dates.

Q3.  I am required to submit the application form including two recommendation letters. Is it acceptable to send scanned copies of the recommendation letters or must they be original letters? If they are originals, is it possible to have them returned? 

A.   Please send two original recommendation letters (written in English or Japanese). Submitted documents are non returnable.

Q4. Is there any information about TWS Aoyama: Creator-in-Residence?

A.  Please find information in Outline and visit the following website for more infomation: TWS Aoyama 

Q5.  Do you accept applications sent by e-mail? 

A.  Only applications by post are accepted and please make sure to send the Application Form either by certified mail or traceable delivery.

Q6.  Do you require certain level of Japanese language skills?

A.   Artists wishing to apply to the program are required to have sufficient ability to communicate in English.

Q7.  What sorts of facilities/support do TWS offer to the successful candidates?

A.  Please read the outline <Residence Facilities>. TWS staff are happy to assist you and your research during your residency. 

Q8. Do you know any funding bodies which would support us for the residency program at TWS?

A.  Unfortunately, we do not have any information about funds or grants.

Q9. May I send two recommendation letters to TWS separately from my application?

A.  Two original letters of recommendation have to be sent together with your application form.

Q10. I am a practicing curator/researcher/journalist/cultural worker/designer. Is the residency program only open to artists?

A.  The program is aimed at creators who are working in the field of Visual art, Music &Sound art Performing art, Architecture, Design, Research, and Curation whose experience in the specialized area are longer than 5 years.

Q11.  Is it possible to travel around Japan for research, or am I restricted to remain in Tokyo? 
Do I have to fund myself for additional accommodation and travel expenses elsewhere in Japan, or is there any help?

A.  Artists participating in the program are expected to focus on their research during the residency at TWS Aoyama. If you would like to travel within Japan for your research, you have to submit a form of schedule of absence in advance and it will be by your own expense.

Q12. I applied TWS residency program 2012. is my application still valid for this year?

A.  Please send application forms for the residency program you wish to apply even your project is same or similar to that in last year.

Q13. It's not possible to bring my family stay. Is this right?

It is possible only in case TWS admit that it is necessary.

Q14. Should I fill in the application form in Japanese? and are the recommendation letters can be written in Japanese as well?

A.   Please fill in the application form in English and the form in Japanese will be acceptable. The recommendation letters must be written in English or Japanese. 

Q15.  I am interested in applying to the TWS Aoyama Residency under the Performing Arts category as a dancer. Is there a dance studio or open space that I'd have daily access to create in?

A.  Studios will be provided to the participating artists, but the studios are not especially facilitated for performing arts. In addition, TWS shares a building with other offices, so there are some restrictions for moving actions and usage of sound.

Q16. I'm a musician, composer and researcher. I would like to apply for the program in the field of music and sound. However, I'm not sure if I should also add files for images (pictures), movies and essays. 

A. You can add images/movies if you think the materials support your application and please explain the reason you add the materials.

Q17. Is it possible to take part in the program only for a month? (due to personal reason)

A. Please see the outline <Eligibility>, No.8. Artists are required to stay consecutively during the proposed residency period.

Q18.  I am currently in Tokyo studying Japanese language and will be returning to my own country afterwards. Can I apply for the program even though I will not be in Tokyo?

A.  Artists who live and work outside of Japan are eligible to apply for this residency program. If your stay in Japan is temporary period, you can apply for the residency program at TWS. This also means that a Japanese creator whose activity is based on outside of Japan is also eligible to apply. 

Q19.  Is there a studio for printing?

A.  Unfortunately, we do not provide a studio for printing. However, TWS would introduce some studios for printing outside of TWS if you need.

Q20. Do I need to include all the materials for my production in the Artist Fee? As stated in the Application Outline Conditions, "Installation and de-installation costs for the result presentation are not included". Does this mean that there will be an additional budget for installation and de-installation? Or should I include the corresponding costs in the Artist Fee?

A.  Artist Fee is equivalent as a production fee including materials fee. During the residency period, result presentation as "Open Studio" will be covered by artist' own expenses. If you are selected to present your works organized by TWS after your residency period, we take the costs into our consideration.

Q21.  I will need a multimedia projector for my project. Is this equipment available?

A. It will depend on availability if TWS has the equipment you request. If not, you basically need to prepare the equipment by yourself.
