Open Call for the International Creator Residency Program 2014!!


Tokyo Wonder Site is now calling for international creators who can perform new creative activities during their programs at TWS Residency for three months.

■Residency Period: From beginning of January to end of March, 2015 (tentative)

■Number of Applicants to be accepted: 2

- Self contained single room and a studio.
- Air ticket fee, Per Diem and Artist fee

■Application period:
From 29 May 2014 to 31 July 2014 
*Application must be arrived at TWS Residency no later than 31July, 2014
*Only application by post is accepted.
* Application must be sent either by certified mail or traceable delivery.

Q.1 Please let me know how I should apply.

A.  Please download the Application Package from the URL "Application" above and read outline and sample and follow manual.

Q2. We are artists' duo/group. Is it possible for us to apply together in one single application form with single project? Do we share a room?

A.  Group artists are acceptable. However, the Application Forms should be filled in separately from individual creators. Please make sure to send the forms together. TWS will arrange the room for the artists before residency dates.

Q3. I am required to submit the application form including two recommendation letters. Is it acceptable to send scanned copies of the recommendation letters or must they be original letters? If they are originals, is it possible to have them returned?

A. Please send two original recommendation letters (written in English or Japanese). Submitted documents are non returnable.

Q4. Is there any information about TWS Residency?

A.  Please find information in Outline and visit the following website for more infomation: TWS Residency

Q5. Do you accept applications sent by e-mail?

A.  Only applications by post are accepted and please make sure to send the Application Form either by certified mail or traceable delivery.

Q6. Do you require certain level of Japanese language skills?

A. Artists wishing to apply to the program are required to have sufficient ability to communicate in English.

Q7. What sorts of facilities/support do TWS offer to the successful candidates?

A.  Please read the outline <Residence Facilities>. TWS staff are happy to assist you and your research during your residency.

Q8. Do you know any funding bodies which would support us for the residency program at TWS?

A.  Unfortunately, we do not have any information about funds or grants.

Q9. May I send two recommendation letters to TWS separately from my application?

A.  Two original letters of recommendation have to be sent together with your application form.

Q10. Is it possible to travel around Japan for research, or am I restricted to remain in Tokyo? Do I have to fund myself for additional accommodation and travel expenses elsewhere in Japan, or is there any help?

A. Artists participating in the program are expected to focus on their research during the residency at TWS Residency. If you would like to travel within Japan for your research, you have to submit a form of schedule of absence in advance and it will be by your own expense.

Q11. I applied TWS residency program 2012. is my application still valid for this year?

A.  Please send application forms for the residency program you wish to apply even your project is same or similar to that in last year.

Q12. It's not possible to bring my family stay. Is this right?

It is possible only in case TWS admit that it is necessary.

Q13. Should I fill in the application form in Japanese? and are the recommendation letters can be written in Japanese as well?

A. Please fill in the application form in English and the form in Japanese will be acceptable. The recommendation letters must be written in English or Japanese.

Q14. Is it possible to take part in the program only for a month? (due to personal reason)

A. Please see the outline <Eligibility>, No.9. Artists are required to stay consecutively during the proposed residency period.

Q15. I am currently in Tokyo studying Japanese language and will be returning to my own country afterwards. Can I apply for the program even though I will not be in Tokyo?

A. Artists who live and work outside of Japan are eligible to apply for this residency program. If your stay in Japan is temporary period, you can apply for the residency program at TWS. This also means that a Japanese creator whose activity is based on outside of Japan is also eligible to apply.

Q16. Is there a studio for printing?

A. Unfortunately, we do not provide a studio for printing. However, TWS would introduce some studios for printing outside of TWS if you need.

Q17. Do I need to include all the materials for my production in the Artist Fee? As stated in the Application Outline Conditions, "Installation and de-installation costs for the result presentation are not included". Does this mean that there will be an additional budget for installation and de-installation? Or should I include the corresponding costs in the Artist Fee?

A. Artist Fee is equivalent as a production fee including materials fee. During the residency period, result presentation as "Open Studio" will be covered by artist' own expenses. If you are selected to present your works organized by TWS after your residency period, we take the costs into our consideration.

Q18. I will need a multimedia projector for my project. Is this equipment available?

A. It will depend on availability if TWS has the equipment you request. If not, you basically need to prepare the equipment by yourself.

Q19. Would it be possible to choose a different period during the year 2015, if one is selected for residency?

A. The residency period is fixed from beginning of January to end of March and the selected artists cannot choose any different periods in 2015.

Q20. Does the residency change disciplines each year? Will there ever be a residency for creators in the performing arts, specifically music?

A. TWS revised the outline of this program 2014 including the field of the artists. However, TWS will reconsider the outline based on the result of this year program. So please check information of this program next year.

Q21. What facilities do artists have access to for the purpose of making art? What kind of machines and equipment (if any) do your facilities have? Iron welding is allowed?

A. TWS Residency does not have workshops or machines for specific materials but basic equipment such as drivers and saws. Iron welding is not allowed inside of building. However, TWS staffs would help artists to find accessible workshops in Tokyo.

Q22. Can designers apply for the program this year? Is the program also open to "new media/installation" visual artists?

A. Please see the outline <Eligibility> No.2. and No.4. The creators are recognized in the visual art field and if they achieve significant result with their media, they are applicable.

Q23. If a duo proposes a residence, the fee for the project will include travel expenses and fee for both artists?

A. Air ticket fee and Per Diem will be paid for each creator but Artist fee will be paid as a group.
