Tokyo Wonder Site (TWS) launched its residency programs in 2006, cooperating with art centers and cultural institutions all over the world.
Now we are calling for "International Creator Residency Program 2016", aimed at international creators/ curators/ administrators who are willing to perform new creative activities during their programs at TWS Residency.

■Application Deadline
October 30, 2015
*Application Form must arrive at TWS Residency no later than October 30, 2015

■Target for this program
This program is aimed at those creators
-who are willing to explore new creative activities
-who practice in any of the following cultural/ artistic fields: visual art, architecture, design, curation and administration.

■Residency Period/ Number of Creators
[Residency Period (3 months)]
1) From the beginning of May, 2016 to the end of July, 2016
2) From the beginning of September, 2016 to the end of November, 2016
3) From the beginning of January, 2017 to the end of March, 2017

[Number of Creators (tentative)]
2 creators for each period/ 6 creators in total are to be selected.

■What TWS offers
Self-contained single room, Shared studio, Air ticket fee, Per Diem and Artist fee/ Project fee
-Air ticket fee: a Round ticket will be provided
-Living cost (Per Diem): JPY 3,750 (including tax) per day
-Artist fee / Project fee: JPY 300,000 (including tax)

Q1.Do you require certain level of Japanese language skills?
A. No, we do not require any Japanese language skills. Artists wishing to apply for the program are required to have sufficient ability to communicate in English.

Q2.I have participated in TWS residency program before. Can I apply for this residency program again?
A. Yes, you can. However, you cannot apply for the International Creator Residency Program if you have participated in the International Creator Residency Program before.


Q3. I am a Japanese creator based in the outside of Japan. May I fill in the application form in Japanese?
A. Yes. Please use the Application Form_Japanese(.pdf) in Application Package.

Q4.Do you accept applications sent by e-mail?
A. Please see Section 8. Application Method of the Outline and send the application by certified mail or traceable delivery (e.g. FedEx, DHL, EMS etc.).

Letters of recommendation

Q5. Is it acceptable to send scanned copies of the recommendation letters or must they be original letters? If they are originals, can you return them? Moreover, may I send two recommendation letters to TWS separately from my application?
A. Please see Section 8.Application Method and Section 9.Application-2 of the Outline. TWS accept only original recommendation letters and they are non-returnable. Please send two original letters with your all of application materials.

Residence Facilities

Q6.What sorts of facilities does TWS offer to the successful candidates?
A. You basically need to prepare the equipment by yourself. TWS has few basic tools like saws, hammers, Pliers and minimum equipment like projectors, speakers, DVD players and so on. It is limited of the variety and the number. *Please read through Section 10. Residence Facilities on the Application Outline.

Other questions

Q7.Is it possible to travel around Japan for my artwork and research, or am I restricted to remain in Tokyo?
A. Artists participating in the program are expected to focus on their new works during the residency period. If you need to stay outside TWS Residency for your work or research, you have to consult in advance with TWS.

Q8.Do I have to fund myself for additional accommodation and travel expenses elsewhere in Japan, or is there any help?
A. TWS will not provide any financial support for additional accommodation and travel expenses elsewhere in Japan.

Q9.I applied for all of residency periods. Would it be possible to choose the period by myself if I were selected?
A. You are not able to choose a residency period. TWS will choose and make the decision.

Applying as a Duo

Q10. Can we apply for this residency program as a duo?
A. Yes, you can.

Q11. If we apply for this program as a duo, can we get the financial supports (air ticket, per diem and artist fee/project fee) for each?
A. No. TWS only provides financial supports for one person.

Q12. Can we apply together in one single application since we are working as a duo?
A. Please fill in the Application Forms separately and send the forms together. However, please note that Section 14-2 and Section 14-3 of the Application Form should be the same.

Q13. Do you accept the letters of recommendation provided as a duo? Should we submit 2 individual letters each?
A. We accept letters of recommendation provided for a duo.

Q14. Is it possible to submit just one DVD/CD-R as a duo?
A. Yes, just one DVD/CD-R is good enough.
