
Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) calls for project proposals for OPEN SITE 11, which will be held at TOKAS Hongo from November 2026 to February 2027. In the OPEN SITE 10, eight projects including curation projects, performances and workshops were selected from 570 applications following a strict selection process. We are looking for creative projects which explore new expression/art/culture reflecting the contemporaneous sociality.
Proposal must fulfill all conditions below.
(1) Projects that can be realized using a space such as: exhibitions, installations, research presentations, performing arts, films and audio-visual works, lectures, symposiums or workshops and any other projects which are related to above or combined projects.
(2) Projects which explore new expression/art/culture reflecting the contemporaneous sociality.
(3) Projects which are well structured and have unique originalities.
A. Exhibition (Exhibition period: about a month / Admission: Free)
B. Performance (Execution period: 3 days *Creation period starts from the previous week / Ticket price must be set)
C. dot (Execution period: 3 days, 6 days / Admission: Free)
*dot is a category for short-term exhibitions, film screenings, as well as events such as workshops, symposiums, lectures, and other events.

Candidates must fulfill conditions below.
(1) Be able to take responsibilities for planning, preparations, and executions of projects.
(2) Candidates who have passed the first selection must attend the interview in the second selection.
*Online interviews may be considered for overseas or distant residents.
(3) The organizer shall be responsible for all set-up and removal, including arrangements for necessary personnel.
In particular, if the organizer is not available at the time of dismantling, they should take measures such as appointing a representative.
(1) Providing a space at TOKAS Hongo for projects for free of charge.
(2) Production support subsidy|Exhibition: 400,000 JPY|Performance: 200,000 JPY|dot: 100,000 JPY *Tax will apply.
(3) Installation support|Exhibition: A part of the installation is outsourced to a professional team.|Performance: 200,000 JPY
(4) Transportation support|Exhibition and Performance: Up to 200,000 JPY (conditions apply)|dot: 20,000 JPY

Q. Is there any age limit for applying?
A. No. There is no age limit.
Q. Can we apply as a group?
A. Yes, you can. If the applicant is different from the representative of the group, please apply with applicant's name and his/her information. The representative's name should be mentioned in the Group Name field with the name of the group. Please include group's CV in the portfolio.
Q. Can I apply for more than two projects?
A. Yes, you can. Please submit application forms for each project.
Q. My project can be executed in any category of Exhibition, Performance and dot. Can I apply for all?
A. Please submit application documents per category.
Q. If my project can be executed in either space, should I submit floorplans for all spaces?
A. It is not necessary to prepare all floor plans. Please submit the floor plan for your first-choice space. TOKAS will determine which space accommodates your project.
Q. Is it possible to use more than two spaces (Space A, B, C)?
A. One project can use one space only.
Q. Is it eligible to apply for sponsorship or funding from companies, organizations, etc. for the execution of the project?
A. Yes, you can apply for grants, except funding by Arts Council Tokyo, which is run by the same foundation as TOKAS.
Q. Please briefly describe the subsidy and accommodation.
A. Overseas residents participating in the “Exhibition” or “Performance” category are free to use the subsidy up to 600,000 yen. Accommodation at the TOKAS Residency is also available. Those participating in the “dot” category are free to use the subsidy up to 120,000 yen. Accommodation at the TOKAS Residency is not available.
TOKAS will NOT supply airline tickets, artist fees, or per diem.
Q. Will airline ticket and accommodation fee be provided by TOKAS for overseas or domestic residents who lives far from Tokyo?
A. TOKAS will provide only subsidy for participants as mentioned in the “Application Outline and Notices.” TOKAS offers a room in TOKAS Residency for those who live in places far from Tokyo only during the installing and de-installing period. We have a limited number of rooms available. Please see “Application Outline and Notices” for more detail.

Q. How should budget items be written?
A. Necessary expenses, accommodation, travel expenses and per diem, etc. should be coordinated by the participants themselves within the range provided by TOKAS. If the expenses do not fit within these limits, please cover them with other subsidies or your own expenses. Please enter all estimated amounts, including travel and per diem expenses, in the budget section.
Q. Which name should I apply with, if I have an artist name which is different from my real name?
A. Please write your real name as the applicant, and your artist name as the group name.
(B) Portfolio
Portfolio should be up to 5 pages per application.
Q. We are applying as a group, can we submit our portfolio in 5 pages per artist?
A. Please compile your portfolio 5 pages as a group.
■Exhibition/dot
Q. What is unique about dot category?
A. dot is suited for short-term exhibitions, film screenings, as well as events such as workshops, symposiums, lectures, and other events (*All admission free).
Q. Is it possible to hold related events such as talk events or performances during the exhibition period?
A. Yes, it is. Please note that it is not allowed to charge any fee for the event.
Q. Are the artworks covered by any insurance while on display?
A. TOKAS will purchase insurance for damage or loss of artworks due to unavoidable accident during the exhibition period. However, insurance may not apply to some works depending on their contents. Please purchase insurance on your own if necessary.

Q. How many seats can be placed in the venue?
A. Depending on how to set the seating area. However, since the venue is a normal gallery space and there is no sloping, 40 seats are appropriate to have a whole stage view from each seat.
■Exhibition/Performance/dot
Q. Are there any equipment we can use for free in TOKAS?
A. Participants must arrange all necessary materials and equipment for execution of their project by their own responsibilities. The following equipment is owned by TOKAS, but due to limited availability, will only be available for use if coordinated with other participants.

- Basic equipment (speakers, projectors, monitors, media players)
Q. Can I use paint in the gallery spaces?
A. Only water-based paint is permitted to use. No oil-based nor pencils. The floor must be covered when using paint and it is mandatory for the participants to recover the spaces to its original condition.

Q. Is it possible to sell catalog or products on site?
A. No money handling is allowed for any reasons including donation or sales except ticket sales for performance projects.
Q. Is it possible to serve drink and food?
A. Participants are not allowed to serve food/drink to visitors/audiences in general.

Q. Does the proposed exhibition need to consist entirely of newly created works that have never been exhibited elsewhere?
A. No it doesn’t.
Q. Is it possible to apply even if I have participated in TOKAS program in the past?
A. It is possible.
Q. Is it possible to stay in TOKAS Residency for the full duration of the exhibition?
A. The basic duration is during installation/de-installation period of the project, although the duration will be defined by TOKAS depending on each situation.
