TWS Aoyama: Creator-in-Residence laid down the Exchange Program for cultural exchange between Tokyo and other international cities through invitation and dispatch of young artists.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Guide-lines for the Promotion of Culture aim to ensure and actively promote cultural diversity and supports this program. This time, Tokyo Wonder Site, cooperating with SSamzie Space an alternative space in Seoul, conducts "Seoul-Tokyo Fine Arts Exchange Residency Program". An artist dispatched from South Korea who was selected by SSamzie Space and TWS is staying and executing art work in TWS Aoyama: Creator-in-Resindence.
The invited artist for approximately 2 and a half month resindency program is the Korean Artist, Donghee Koo who mainly works on video and photograph. She recently focuses on endurance of human body in various situations and aims to develop her theme "How the human action transforms through the timeline based medium" in Tokyo.
At first sight, Koo's works appeared as following styles of mass production such as documentary TV program or "V cinema". However through developing works, she does some improvisations. This operation prevents her works from merely being categorized. These gaps from the typicality and the theme of the movie affects each other, therefore cause transformation. As a result of this process, her work seems to be difficult to read obediently because of the lack of consistency that originally included. In Tokyo, she became interested in game centre and Pachinko. Those places can be seen as the systems generating extreme situation for human by both mental and physical aspect. At this open studio, her latest work developed in Tokyo including ideas of these places will be presented.
