Tokyo Wonder Site (TWS) serves as a Tokyo platform for the work of creators from across the globe. Every year around one hundred individuals take part in the program, dedicating themselves enthusiastically to the production of artworks both in Tokyo and at designated locations overseas. Day-to-day art research and production take place at TWS throughout the year, artists in residence and other creators interacting and encouraging each other to take new and exciting directions in their work. The second chapter of Tokyo Story 2013, an exhibition of the product of fiscal 2012 residencies, presents Artist, a collaborative work by Hiroshi Ashikaga, Ichiro Endo, and Takashi Kuribayashi.

Kuribayashi questions the nature of the boundary lines that exist in all environments. Endo, with his entire body, powerfully delivers a simple message to all mankind: "to the future." With a pinhole camera, Ashikaga quietly reveals the workings of man and nature in the eternal flow of time.

Each of these artists employs a different style and approach, yet taking part in residencies at the same time led to an exchange of experiences and ideas that fostered a deep resonance among them. Saying that "regardless of the situation, we just have to think seriously about 'what needs to be done now' and about the presentation," they began the project using their own bodies and senses as tools in exposing "the artist as self" and what it means to "live as an artist" who faces the world cautiously and sensitively. Over the course of the show, these artists who are themselves their own works of art will transform the exhibition space.

In addition, the exhibition marks the resumption of activity at Tokyo Wonder Site Shibuya after a yearlong hiatus. Since opening in 2005, TWS Shibuya has been a bold pioneer in exploring new territory with creators, and we hope you will join us in welcoming its new beginning.
