Exhibition Overview
We Buy White Albums is Rutherford Chang's collection of over 1,000 copies of The Beatles' White Album displayed in the form of a record store. The albums are arranged in bins by serial number and visitors are invited to browse and listen to copies of their choice. Though unlike a regular store, it stocks only The White Album, and copies are only bought, not sold.Released in 1968, The White Album featured a famously stark cover designed by Richard Hamilton. Entirely white except for an unique serial number stamped in the corner, the covers have served as blank canvas accumulating stains, doodles, writing, and mold, making every copy identical yet unique. Together the distinct multiples form a collective artifact telling stories from the last half-Century.
Also featured is a vinyl album Chang created by layering 100 different copies from his collection, exploring the sonic and visual differences between the aged vinyl discs and covers.

Rutherford Chang
Rutherford Chang is an artist based in New York. His work uses systematic processes to collect, organize, and re-arrange cultural products to further explore their original nature. He received a BA from Wesleyan University in 2002, and has exhibited internationally, including at FACT in Liverpool, Recess in New York, White Space in Beijing, Brown Gallery in London, and Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin.
