HANAGATA Shin “A Garden of Prosthesis”

OPEN SITE 8 | Open Call Program【Performance】

This performance inverts the anthropocentric concept of the world, in order to explore possibilities of the human body for the benefit of something else. Various artificial objects, natural objects and human bodies, which initially coexist on equal terms in this “garden,” are “grafted” by the “gardeners,” and eventually intrude one another. Each of these objects treats those around it as artificial limbs, and even humans end up being “prostheses” of plants or machines. As the relationships between the objects get increasingly out of control, they coalesce into chimeras that may deviate from the functions and meanings that have been defined within human society. While mutually contradicting, they arrange with each other in order to continue to coexist and shape the “garden.”

Profile

Born in 1995 in Tokyo. Works in Kyoto. Engages in artistic practices revolving around the body and its alienation from the “individual human,” inspired by an interest in the boundaries between the self and others, humans and non-humans, and how they continue to change in the technologically advancing capitalist society.
