Purpose of the residency
Over the last number of years I have made paintings that respond to the work of the Dutch architect Dom Hans Van der Laan, and this current proposal looks to extend my interest in the relationship between art and architecture by making a painterly and drawing response to the work of the Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Although I have only viewed photographs of Ando's buildings these images have stimulated a curiosity - I am drawn to the pared-down formal qualities that appear deceptively simple (although complex) while appreciating too that those authentic qualities are hard to sense through photographic means. By visiting some of Ando's buildings I wish to produce a new work body of work that begins a visual dialogue with Ando's architecture.
