Purpose of the residency

In the Master Degree program, I explore the stillness and the uncanny between the notion of space and domesticity. It highly reference on Sigmund Freud's theory of the Uncanny and aims to trigger a negative sensation (in especially an attraction and repulsion sensation) that harbors within one's psyche.
After a deeper research on the Uncanny, I see its relationship with Japanese notion of the Mono. I seek to understand more about Japanese aesthetics such as Wabi Sabi, Yuugen and Mono no Aware that embraces the beauty of impermanence of things. I also seek to understand the element of 'stillness' and domesticity in Japanese culture.

Plan during the residency

As this is a 1 month research programme, I would like to take the initial two weeks for a theory-based research and the later two weeks for a practical research.
The theory-based research shall seek a deeper understanding on the notion of mono no aware and stillness in domesticity. It will involve book research from the library, online research as well as artist research. The practical research shall reflect on the theory-based research through photograph/ documentation of selected elements of domesticity. As such, the practical research would need to revisit the old historical domestic space as well as the new modern domestic space in Japan.
