Purpose of the residency

As my work is primarily visual, my research into the relation between humankind and universe translates into an exploration of ways of using spatiality, the spectator, form and visual language within the United Planets cycle. This time I want to make use of the city of Tokyo as a basis for my visual and site-specific research. Above all I would like to confront my artistic research with a different context and audience. Inspired by the Japanese visual culture I hope to enter in an intercultural approach and dialogue with the traditional and the contemporary context of Tokyo.

Plan during the residency

First of all I want to take the time to immerse myself within the cultural and physical context of the city. I will document and interpret this experience, without interfering or manipulating the existing context. With this gained knowledge and experience I want to implement the spatial context of Tokyo in site-specific experiments and research on form and content. Alongside I will also be doing research on the MARS series, which focuses on human resistance against great physical forces. In MARS II I will examine the moment of a catastrophe and the reactions of the body on drastic changes in its environment. It centers on the memento mori. During my research I will work within an intercultural frame and allow the traditional and contemporary appearances of Japan to inspire my work.
