Purpose of the residency

I am interested in the history and evolution of Japan and in particular of the city of Tokyo therefore I intend to explore the changes between the ancient and the modern city, especially in relation to the latest earthquakes and natural disasters that occurred last May.
Hence, taking into account the natural landscapes such as those portrayed on the old Japanese prints, I aim to study the traditional printing techniques in relation to the new artistic trends present in Tokyo.

Plan during the residency

I am interested in interacting with Japanese artists and craftsmen to learn the traditional print techniques. I aim to join my artistic practice with historical and theoretical research in order to enhance my knowledge as an Italian artist, expert in serigraphy and with a background in visual communication.
Over the first month of residency I am going to study, research and develop the concept around which I will create my art work and afterwards I will go into the phase of production. On the basis of my research, my art work will bring to light my personal perspective about Japanese art.
My purpose is to focus on the issues related to the environment of Japan and Tokyo after the earthquakes and the nuclear catastrophe.
