Purpose of the residency

I'm looking forward to visiting Japan. This will be my first time. I'm very excited to discover the contemporary art scene there, visit art spaces, meet and interact with artists, exchange experiences, especially with artists who work with media art and experimental video. I would like to acquire expertise in the fields of visual narrative of video art in Japan, especially video and film works that use performing arts and contemporary dance as a medium or tool. This I hope to achieve through collaboration with artists, watching artworks and visiting archives and libraries. My artworks have different frameworks and mediums. Therefore I find freedom in moving between ideas, using appropriate tools or modes of expression. That's what encourages me in general to pursue this experience and travel to Tokyo. I'd like to learn about different art forms and develop new intellectual interests. This would enrich my art as well as my thoughts in general.

Plan during the residency

The general idea of my project is to work on an experimental film based on a selection of multilayered short stories. The visual elements making the film will present a sort of parallel story to the text, which is about scenes of performers/dancers from Japan. I would like to collaborate with a choreographer, where we'd work together on creating a visually rich and multilayered narrative, combining images inspired by familiar scenes of life in Japan with fictional/surreal situations - the resulting film will have different dimensions and parallels about the reality of both Egypt and Japan.
