Purpose of the residency

The project will be to study various organizations in Tokyo as future references in my expertise. The project is originated from my experience in the annual conference for The Artist Village Alliance of Taiwan in 2015. The conference focused on the operation of artist villages under different contexts, difficulties we have encountered and future visions that one could have. The discussion of the conference has generated lots thoughts, I have started to wonder what is the role of an artist village could cast in the current society? Should it just be confined as a place to nurture for art creators, or could it be more? If so, then what could it be?
The purpose of this project is to further the discussion in that conference through vast investigation of diverse institutions, and also exchange my experience with them, hoping to generate diverse thoughts and open up possibilities.

Plan during the residency

The project would be based on studying numerous organizations, which conduct Artist in Residency (hereafter in short as AIR) programs, through the means of interviewing (both to staffs and AIR artists) and archive studying. The target organization could be categorized into following type: Governmental AIR, Private institution AIR, Museum based AIR, School based AIR, Project based AIR, Local Community based AIR, Single Art Form AIR and Alternative AIR. The interview will be a conversation between staff to staff, a two-way communication, so that we could mutually exchange our experiences. The interview will first target the staff, and then current residency artists in the institution. Dialogue and observation will be complied into binders with text or any possible forms.
