Purpose of the residency

"Hidden Rivers"
Many rivers and creeks flow throughout the city of Tokyo once. Waterways were vital for people's lives economically, however, many rivers disappeared during the rapid economic growth after the war. Tokyo now has many buried rivers called "ankyo" in Japanese. Water is not only a vital source for our survival, but also very important for our emotional well-beings. I live near Boston, Massachusetts, and I love the Charles River. The river also runs through my town. To me, the visual presence of the water, such as lakes, rivers, and ponds is extremely important for healing. This time, I'm returning to my birthplace, Tokyo, to seek many of the buried rivers and creeks. My research will focus on learning about buried rivers as something that has been visually lost in people's lives, as well as experiencing the presence of the hidden rivers.

Plan during the residency

My aim is to visit many "ankyo" spots in Tokyo. I'll focus on several areas as there are many networks of buried rivers like a spider web. I plan to visit regional museums to study old maps or photographs. My research activities will include documentation of the ankyo sites--videotaping, photographing, writing and making sketches.
