Purpose of the residency

Will there be rice growing on the moon in the future? This playful and speculative questions opens our collaborative research around the topic of rice and its very special positions in japanese society: Rice is a ressource, raw and building material, currency and food and at the same time a political instrument that determinates votes. Rice points to both: to very traditional as well as to very futuristic concepts that becomes visible in the moon metaphor we use in the project- leading to research in archives and directly on the field, but also evoking talks and conversation around the theme. Main purpose of the research stay is to find and create the narrative and network for a new curatoral work on the outcome of the research.

Plan during the residency

- Archive research in museums and film archives.
- Interviews
- Field studies
- Research and performative recreation of a former rice shop in Tokyo (1910- 1945).
- Hosting an event with other artists.
