Purpose of the residency

Questioning the agency of painting and engaging with the expanded field of painting, I invite artisanal practices and collaborative projects into the equation of painting history. My work oscillates between a conceptual analysis of painting and a devotion to painterly processes. A central subject is the relationship between painting and subjectivity - a connection that is softened, destabilized, and sometimes parodied in my work. This becomes particularly evident in my engagement with the metaphysical strands of abstraction and the animistic qualities of painting.
Many of my questions ponder on the circulation of images, the role of chance in art making, and the relationship between the artist's hand and the canvas in the digital age. I do not consider my works as isolated or static, but rather as objects of exchange and interaction. This is also reflected in my collaborative projects such as DAS INSTITUT (with Adele Röder since 2007) and KAYA (with Debo Eilers since 2010) and the collaboration with UNITED BROTHERS (Ei and Tomoo Arakawa).

Plan during the residency

- Finalization of a new video with my artist-colleagues Ei and Tomoo Arakawa (UNITED BROTHERS), this project will involve travels for shooting and editing to Iwaki, Fukushima and Kyoto.
- Making new KAYA paintings in the studio of Tokyo Arts and Space - Research on the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri, in particular its washi floats and lanterns
- Take japanese cuisine cooking class
- Studio visit with Shinro Ohtake in Uwajima
