Purpose of the residency

Conducting research on Japan-based contemporary artistic practices, studio visits, independent project spaces, and the cultural impacts on artistic practice. Researching for programming Hospitality further and gaining insight on artists and cultural scene in Japan. Creating lasting relations and exchange with cultural practitioners in Japan.

Plan during the residency
  • conduct studio visits with Japan-based artists
  • meeting with project spaces in Japan
  • realisation of an exhibition project in Tokyo for November 2023
  • Finish up of book project, which will involve exhibition in Tokyo 2023
Activities during the residency

During the 3-month residency my plan was to look into fluid and temporary forms of curating, that would connect to my ideas of the curatorial project “hospitality” and understand more about the historical and current use of spaces in Tokyo and Japan and how curatorial projects come into life here, what kind of spaces are used beyond the white cube. I further wanted to research and meet artists to include in my future programming and realize an exhibition project in Tokyo, that had already some connections to Japan in the past.
Ideally, the exhibition that I planned would involve also artists that I got to know during the residency and would contribute to the art scene in Tokyo by connecting the project and the involved artists.

Outcome of the residency

I realized the temporary exhibition entitled “November,” including artists from abroad and Japan, using an empty former gallery space that was out of use. This created a platform for many encounters with artists, curators and other visitors and I learned about various forms of artistic production in Tokyo and beyond. I made many connections with local producers that will be crucial for my future projects and deepened my knowledge and understanding of the current tendencies in contemporary Japanese art. I got to know artists and curators with similar interests in fluid forms of exhibition making and hopefully collaboration at a later point.
