Purpose of the residency

Having worked on an exchange between Japanese and Austrian art and culture over the past years, the aim of the stay is to strengthen the ties, which have started almost ten years ago.
Staying at the TWS Aoyama residency is the perfect way to meet young new artists, visit their studios and get further ideas on the latest issues within Japanese art, which also developed after the incidents in 2011. It is more than ever important to look at current trends and changes that have taken place in art with regard to the global developments of recent years. Beside the intensification of contacts there will be the continuation of a photo project on the changing parameters of city structures and the dynamics within Tokyo and Japan.

Plan during the residency

The purpose of the stay is to meet representatives of art institutions and to develop possibilities for further collaborations. Besides Tokyo Wonder Site, there are meetings scheduled with Yuko Hasegawa from MOT, Keiko Toyoda at Shiseido Gallery, among others. Furthermore, there will be meetings with artists and an exchange with the residents at TWS. The residence will also be used to further work on the photo-project TokyPhile, which will result in a slide show with sound to be published towards the end of the year. In all these activities the uniqueness of Japanese culture as well as the professional parameters of daily life will be scrutinized on various levels of reflection.
