Purpose of the residency

MEGA-PHONICS. Interventions in public spaces where volunteers will use megaphones to recite a collection of Mexican romantic songs. The lyrics will be phonetically transcribed from Spanish into Japanese using Katakana.

Plan during the residency

Organize a series of interventions in public spaces where volunteers will use megaphones to recite a collection of lyrics from classic Mexican songs. The words won't be translated but phonetically transcribed from Spanish into Japanese using Katakana. What will be spoken through the megaphones will be a phonetic interpretation of the original songs. I am interested in working with material that is an intricate part of one country's identity and insert it in a far-off context. I want to use elements of popular culture that are full of emotional relevance, strip them off their original background, and project them as sounds, consequently creating music.
