Purpose of the residency

Teller takes its inspiration from the fast-food culture experienced during a stay in Germany, where food is served on paper plates(teller), and the tell-tale grease stains left behind on these plates. The project views these paper plates and the remnants of meals as objects that narrate everyday life.
Similar fast-food culture is present in Belgium, notably with their famous "frites" (French fries). I aim to explore how exposure to such food culture has influenced the area around Wiels.

Plan during the residency
  • Research and documentation of fast food culture in Brussels
  • Research on disposable utensils
  • Collection of materials and objects
  • Production of work
  • Open studio/exhibition
Activities during the residency

One of the iconic dishes representing Belgium is Frites (french fries). Through exploring various stories related to Frites, I delved into Belgian history and the Belgian national identity. What’s more, in Brussels, the city where I stayed, there is a famous flea market called Jeu de Balle, where a wide range of personal belongings—from furniture and dishes to clothing and family photographs—are sold. I collected photographs and small objects as materials for my work, and in the studio provided, I created various pieces. These two research processes inspired the creation of my installation work.

Outcome of the residency

During my three-month stay at WIELS, I was able to focus on creating works in the spacious studio, which resulted in the production of numerous pieces. I also received highly valuable feedback from my mentors and fellow residents. Throughout my stay, I had the opportunity to engage with local artists at various exhibitions, performances, openings, and events. The studio visits organized by WIELS allowed me to exchange opinions with numerous curators and artists, who provided insights and feedback on my works and creative process from an ocean of perspectives. Having produced a significant body of work, I am now looking forward to future exhibitions and further development of these pieces. Additionally, through my interactions with many professionals in the art world, I hope for future exhibition opportunities and collaborations.
