Purpose of the residency

I will objectively examine Japan's unique Internet and physicality from a foreign perspective. I would also like to consider presentation formats in more open places in Tokyo. This is because I feel that the form of my activities is not suitable for presentation in a closed space such as a gallery. As this will be my first residency and research in Tokyo, I will focus on conducting research in various communities and documenting myself over a period of time. I will be researching the place of minorities in urban areas and participating in communities such as gaming and VR.

Plan during the residency
  • Continue participation in the Hikikomori VOICE STATION that I attended last year|, and research on minorities and suicide.
  • Research within TOKAS on the relationship between technology and the body, and the differences between foreign participants and Japanese.
  • A workshop was held to play a game with a 3D scan of your own body.
  • Research the VR community. Participation in workshops to improve production techniques.
  • VR Performance. Discussion
Activities during the residency

A residency project that AI analyzes the limited days of living and memories within the residency to create future memories. It alters my daily life in response to the results that interacts with the AI, Production of a VR performance themed the relationship between the body and VR. Participating in AI and VR-related events to exchange opinions. Observing the ever-changing self through text, then publicly sharing it in the studio to discuss contemporary identity with those around.

Outcome of the residency

During my interactions with the AI, I felt my future was becoming predetermined. To counter this, I repeatedly requested it to create entries for the final day of my residency or the last day of my life, aiming to realign my perspective so I could feel my life changing through my daily actions. I tried to write honest, unfiltered diary entries without worrying about being seen. However, publishing them often led to frequent feedback—comments or teasing. Consequently, revealing too much of my inner self meant having to handle the reactions to it, which proved difficult for me. In the end, the content might have become conscious of being seen by others. Since my primary goal was training the AI, I took measures like censoring words or omitting content in the published diaries. Not being an AI engineer myself, this experience made me reconsider how to engage with AI that evolves daily and how to confront the shifting identity shaped by technology.
