Purpose of the residency
In cities around Basel—a border city—I will undertake “transboundary walks” that cross the borders of three countries. Through this process, I will research how residual objects (materials and waste) appear at the boundary between private spaces (residences) and public spaces (sidewalks) within the urban environment. In parallel, I will visit archaeological museums and sites across Switzerland to study prehistoric lake-dwelling settlements (pile dwellings) and the archaeological artifacts excavated from them. By regarding residual objects from the contemporary urban environment as potential “artifacts” of the near future, I will develop my work from the perspective of a form of “future archaeology.”
Plan during the residency
- In the cities surrounding Basel, I will undertake transboundary walks that cross the borders of Switzerland, Germany, and France. Through these walks, I will examine how differences in national context, cultural spheres, and language influence the ways in which urban residues—objects and waste—appear within the urban environment.
- In order to study prehistoric pile dwellings (stilt houses) in Switzerland and the archaeological artifacts associated with them, I will visit archaeological museums and archaeological sites across the country.
- Based on this research, I will develop new works through processes such as drawing and 3D modeling, conceiving “future artifacts” that take contemporary urban residues as their medium.
- Through events such as open studios, I will exchange ideas about my artistic practice with local artists, curators, and other art professionals.
- Based in Basel, I will visit museums, Kunsthallen, and galleries across Switzerland, as well as events such as Art Basel taking place during my residency. Through these visits, I will conduct research on the local art scene.
