I plan to develop "In My Memory are Lagoons," a curatorial project exploring how contemporary art activates collective memory and ecological thinking through sound, installation, and embodied research. This phase of the project will focus on Japanese artists whose practices engage with non-extractive ecologies, ancestral knowledge systems, and technologies of listening—particularly those that propose alternative modes of sensing, remembering, and coexisting with more-than-human worlds. I aim to connect with artists, curators, and researchers working at the intersection of environmental history, sonic archives, and post-growth imaginaries, seeking collaborations that foreground minor, situated, and relational ways of knowing and making.
During the residency I was able to be immersed in the Tokyo art scene and become familiar with the city, its people, and institutions. I was privileged to be able to conduct various studio visits with fantastic artists, as well as visit exhibitions and museums throughout the city. It was enriching in all senses, particularly through the informal exchange with peers and the time to experience Tokyo in its multiple facets.
My curiosity and research interests led me to find specific discourses and events, while the TOKAS programme allowed for connection, networking, and dissemination. Additionally, I was able to visit Naoshima and Teshima islands, enriching my knowledge on art and architecture in Japan.
The residency was truly precious for my understanding of the Japanese art scene and broader contexts. I was able to meet quite a number of brilliant artists and curators who gave me insights on the concerns and topics that are being approached within the contemporary arts in Tokyo and beyond.
I hope these connections will develop into work collaborations in the future.
