Purpose of the residency

Since 2018, I have visited Tokyo twice, both times briefly. The residency gives me the opportunity to spend extended time in Japanese culture, which has played a crucial role in my formation since childhood — particularly its literature, cinema, and the visual arts of the 1970s. Specifically: Yasunari Kawabata's allusive, indirect, and metaphorical approach; in cinema, Kenji Mizoguchi, Yasujirō Ozu, Takashi Miike, and many other visions that shaped me; as well as the Mono-ha movement.
This prolonged stay in Japan will allow me to experience in daily life the birthplace of these influences — to understand how such an immense artistic treasure emerged from this culture.

Sunrise
From Genocide
to Gene Pool and from Gene Pool to Genocide.
The piece Sunrise is the first part of a larger concept: From Genocide to Gene Pool and from Gene Pool to Genocide. It deconstructs Yasunari Kawabata's novella Thousand Cranes within a contemporary political and economic context, applying his indirect, allusive, metaphorical method — which has shaped my artistic practice and my physical and metaphysical perception of the world. Sunrise examines the beauty created by human beings, in which pain and love are intertwined and passed down through generations — through the family, and through the political and social dimensions of history. In Thousand Cranes, the father's tea cup carries transgenerational trauma across generations, shaping lives and the condition of the psyche. Sunrise unfolds these ideas in a contemporary economic-political and socio-psychological context.

Plan during the residency
  • Visiting Yasunari Kawabata Museum in Ibaraki city.
  • Researching objects in Kawabata museum.
  • Researching vintage shops of furniture, (Having in mind text _ In praise of the shadows, and objects seen at Kawabata museum).
  • Production of several Scultpures - finalising the installation Sunrise, From Genocide to Gene pool From Gene pool to Genocide
