Purpose of the residency

Through this residency, I will explore Japanese imaginings of the future beyond techno-Orientalist tropes, where Japan’s cultural signifiers are appropriated to create superficially “Japanised” futures that first featured in Western cyberpunk.

Through interviews with artists and cultural workers, my research will focus on Japanese understandings of hybrid human–machine identities and conceptions of low technologies that serve as a foil to super-tech systems.

This research will serve as the foundation for my comparative project on Asia-futurism across East and Southeast Asia, culminating in an online index and exhibition.

Parallel archival research at Waseda University Library will focus on primary sources from the 1960s–present, including futuristic literature and critical essays on technology in Japanese society.

Plan during the residency

• Conduct studio visits and interviews with artists Yuko Mohri, Mariko Mori, and other artists and cultural workers identified through further research.
• Archival research on a sample of futuristic literature and critical essays on technology from the 1960s onwards.
• Connect with curators and researchers who have staged exhibitions and conducted research on local conceptions of futurism.
• Document and organise findings as an index.
