Purpose of the residency

Based on the material recorded of our conversations in 2015, 2017 and 2018, this project tries to investigate the trajectories of the music of the composer, Jean-Claude Eloy. By participating the research residency of TOKAS, this project aims at researching the two significant composition of Eloy, Gaku-no-Michi (1977-78) and Approaching Meditative Flame (1983).

Plan during the residency

・conducting research on the compositions of Jean-Claude Eloy made in Japan
・researching sound-related practices in the region of Tokyo
・producing the video essay on Jean-Claude Eloy

Supported by Hong Kong Art Development Council

Activities during the residency

Hong Kong based artist and researcher, Edwin Lo has worked on his on-going artistic research and video essay, “In Searching for Jean-Claude Eloy.” A prominent French electroacoustic composer, Eloy produced numerous works, well-known for their duration and unique approach of sound and composition. Departing from the documentation of the concert in Hong Kong organized by Lo in 2015, the project aims to formulate a composer portrait by incorporating the interviews conducted in Paris and in Hong Kong, excerpts of texts, commentaries by the artist, and sound.

Overview of the residency

I have sticked with my own plan throughout the residency. It is pity that I cannot approach the Buddhist monks that Jean-Claude Eloy worked with. But it was a very nice meeting with Kojima Tsutomu! He is a very nice old man and he took very serious about my interview.
